FIRST FRIDAY FACULTY LECTURE SERIES LAUNCHES WITH ENGAGING SPRING SEASON
|
In February, the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation launched the inaugural season of the First Friday Faculty Lecture (F3L) Series—a new monthly webinar program created to bring our President’s Circle donors closer to the remarkable faculty shaping the minds of tomorrow’s naval leaders.
Co-hosted by Academy staff, including Dr. Samara Firebaugh, USNA Provost and Academic Dean, the series offers an inside look at the cutting-edge teaching, research, and leadership happening across the Yard. Each one-hour lecture features a Naval Academy faculty member sharing insights on their area of expertise, followed by a live Q&A with attendees.
We kicked off the series in February with Dr. John Donnal, Associate Professor in the Weapons, Robotics & Control Engineering Department, who explored how emerging technologies like sensor networks and 3D printing are being deployed aboard U.S. Coast Guard and Navy vessels to improve mission readiness and resilience—highlighting the challenges and opportunities of integrating Internet of Things (IoT) systems into modern defense platforms.
|
In March, we welcomed Dr. Matthew Knight, Assistant Professor in the Physics Department, who shared his experience as a member of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) mission. His lecture offered a behind-the-scenes look at the first successful planetary defense test, in which a spacecraft deliberately impacted an asteroid’s moon to alter its orbit. Dr. Knight also highlighted the unique ways midshipmen contributed to the mission and how USNA’s astrophysics program gives students hands-on research opportunities from the rooftop of Hopper Hall.
To close the season in April, Dr. Brian VanDeMark, longtime professor of history at the Academy, delivered a moving presentation based on his book The Kent State Shooting: An American Tragedy. He examined the social and political tensions of the Vietnam War era that led to the fatal clash between student protesters and National Guardsmen in May 1970, offering reflections on the event’s causes, consequences, and enduring impact on American society.
The First Friday Faculty Lecture Series will return in September 2025 with a fresh lineup of speakers and topics designed to inform, challenge, and inspire. From leadership and ethics to science and strategy, these exclusive sessions provide President’s Circle donors with a deeper understanding of the Naval Academy’s mission and the exceptional educators who bring it to life.
Stay tuned for details on our Fall 2025 speakers—and thank you to all who attended for being part of this exciting new chapter in Foundation programming.
